One shot, three arrested as gunmen disrupt Ebonyi varsity SUG election

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with gunshots fired during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University.

The incident happened while results were being announced, causing panic as the suspects allegedly opened fire to disperse the crowd.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said in a statement on Tuesday that one student was hit by a stray bullet.

“Unfortunately, the bullet struck a student, who was immediately rushed to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for medical attention. The suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Ukandu stated.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, assured students and residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order in the state.

The incident comes barely months after the Students’ Union election at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, also turned violent, leaving several students injured amid ballot box snatching, gunshots, and tear gas.
