Students in Ondo State, under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), staged a protest on Thursday over what they described as bad governance, rising insecurity, and unfulfilled promises by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The demonstration, which caused gridlock on Oba Adesida Road near the ‘A’ Division Police Station, drew attention to the increasing kidnappings in the state, particularly targeting students.
Carrying placards with messages such as “Our schools are not safe, Mr. Governor” and “Fulfill your promise, Mr. Governor,” the students expressed frustration over the worsening security situation.
They explained that many students undergoing Industrial Training (IT) as part of the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) had been kidnapped, with their abductors demanding ransom from their families.
The protesters accused the governor of failing to implement measures that could protect students and reduce unemployment, despite previous assurances.
According to them, the promises to improve job opportunities for graduates remain unmet, deepening their discontent.
Tensions rose during the protest when soldiers arrived at the scene. In a video shared online, a soldier was seen cocking his rifle, which heightened fears of possible violence.
However, a police officer quickly stepped in to calm the situation and prevent any escalation.
The students maintained that they are tired of living in fear and called on the government to take immediate steps to address the security issues in the state.
They also demanded action to tackle unemployment, which they described as a growing challenge for young graduates.
As of the time this report was filed, the Ondo State government had not issued any official response.
Meanwhile, the protesting students vowed to continue their demonstrations until their demands are addressed.
