The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, has provided clarity on the recent leadership changes following the resignations of Deputy Speaker Abayomi Akinruntan and Majority Leader Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi.
According to Oladiji, the reshuffle was intended to reflect the informal political zoning in the state, ensuring a balanced distribution of key positions across different local government areas.
Both Akinruntan and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa hail from Ilaje Local Government Area, while Ogunmolasuyi and Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami come from Owo Local Government Area. The move was therefore aimed at avoiding the concentration of power in specific zones.
Akinruntan, a prince from Ugbo Kingdom representing Ilaje Constituency 1, indicated in his resignation letter—read aloud by the House Clerk, Benjamin Jayeiola—that his departure was consistent with traditional practices promoting equitable political representation. Ogunmolasuyi did not disclose reasons for stepping down but was present during the plenary session when the changes were enacted, unlike Akinruntan.
In a prompt response, Ololade Gbegudu of Okitipupa Constituency 2 was nominated as the new Deputy Speaker. His nomination came from Oluwatoyin Japhet (Akoko North East) and was seconded by Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1).
Speaker Oladiji praised the outgoing officers for managing the transition gracefully. He described Akinruntan as a calm and supportive presence, while lauding Ogunmolasuyi as a key figure who helped maintain unity within the Assembly.
