Ondo Police nabs 3 herders over death of farmer

Three herders have been arrested in connection with the killing of a 36-year-old farmer, Sunday Ayeni, following a dispute over compensation for grazing on his land and damaging his crops.

The suspects are Abdullah Halilu Tumbi, 59; Mohamodu Adamu Bonkolo, 50; and Shagari Muhammed, 45.

They are accused of fatally stabbing Ayeni while he was working on his farm at Afiri Camp, near Oka-Akoko in the Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects have been charged with conspiracy and murder. Police prosecutor Folashade Adeyemi informed an Akure Chief Magistrate Court that the alleged offense occurred on August 10, 2024.

According to Adeyemi, the defendants, in collaboration with others still at large, allegedly conspired to murder Ayeni by attacking him with a cutlass while he worked on his farm.

The charge reads: “That you, Abdullah Halilu Tumbi, Mohamodu Adamu Bonkolo, and Shagari Muhammed, and others at large, did stab one Ayeni Sunday ‘m’ during a clash with him on his farm with a sharp cutlass on his stomach, which eventually led to his death.”

According to the prosecutor, the offense violates Sections 316, 319, and 324 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.

She requested that the court remand the defendants at a correctional facility in the state while awaiting advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP,.

Magistrate A. Akinboboye did not take the defendants’ pleas but ordered their remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure, pending further advice from the DPP.

It is high time the Ondo state Government find solutions to the incessant imvation of farm land .destruction of farmers crops and killing of farmers who dare to challenge them by herders.Thid is the reason for foods shortage. My cassava farm was eaten up about four days ago by cattle. I didn’t report to any law enforcement agent, moreso l didn’t meet them there.Former Government had ban open grazing. Present Governor should enforce it. Justice must be done on killers of Farmer on his fsrm.
