Ondo Pastor, Wife Nabbed for Staging Kidnapping, Demanding ₦10m Ransom

The Ondo State Police Command has uncovered a bizarre case of self-kidnapping involving a 62-year-old pastor, Sanmori Olubumi Joshua, and his 42-year-old wife, Mrs. Sanmori Taiwo, who allegedly conspired to fake her abduction in order to extort money from relatives.

The incident, which took place on August 23, 2025, in Ondo City, saw Mrs. Taiwo hide in a separate room in their residence while her husband placed calls to relatives, claiming she had been abducted by gunmen demanding ₦10 million ransom.

One of the relatives, Mr. Fasegha O. Joseph, became suspicious and petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal. Acting on the report, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad (SAKS), supported by officers from Enu-Owa Division, stormed the couple’s residence where the woman was found.

Initially, Mrs. Taiwo claimed she had just been released after ₦5 million was allegedly paid. However, under interrogation, she confessed to staging the abduction with her husband to defraud relatives abroad. She admitted that the plot was hatched to settle debts and cater to her personal needs.

Confirming the incident, Police spokespersons described the case as another demonstration of the Command’s resolve to uncover all forms of crime—whether real or staged. CP Lawal commended his men for their swift action, stressing that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and ensuring peace across the state.

The police further praised the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for his people-centered policing strategy anchored on intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and synergy with sister agencies. The Command also acknowledged the efforts of local forest hunters and residents who have consistently provided useful intelligence in the fight against crime.
