Nurses in Ondo State will stop work indefinitely starting Friday, January 31, 2025.
The decision comes after months of complaints about poor working conditions and unpaid benefits.
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) announced the strike in Akure on Thursday.
The state chairman, Felix Orobode, criticized the government for ignoring the welfare of nurses despite their critical role in healthcare.
According to the association, nurses in the state’s 18 local government areas often take on multiple responsibilities, including tasks meant for doctors and pharmacists.
They also said that despite a nationwide brain drain in the sector, they have remained dedicated to saving lives.
The nurses accused the government of failing to honour agreements on salary adjustments.
Although a new salary structure was approved, they claim their January salaries were paid using an old payment scale.
They also noted that while other health workers received salary increases in July 2024, nurses were excluded.
After an emergency meeting, the union decided that all nurses and midwives in the state’s employment would withdraw their services indefinitely until their demands are met.
