A court in Ondo State has ordered the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian police to return the car and other belongings of a man named Emmanuel Ajibade.
The incident started when Ajibade exposed a patrol vehicle of the FRSC that was being used with a damaged tyre.
After the exposure, Ajibade was picked up by security officers, and his car, phone, and glasses were taken from him.
His lawyer took the matter to court and explained what had happened.
He told the court that they had been asking for evidence from the police but got nothing.
On the day the case came up again, the police said they were not ready for trial and wanted a new date. Ajibade’s lawyer, however, asked the court to order that his client’s personal items be returned.
The court listened to both sides. The police and FRSC tried to object, especially about the car, saying it had been impounded and that there was a fine to pay.
The lawyer explained that he had asked for the fine amount so that it could be paid and the court shown the receipt, but no one gave him the figure.
The court agreed that the car should not have been seized without allowing payment and ordered that the fine be paid before the car is returned.
The lawyer also told the court that an officer must be present when the car and phone are handed over.
This is to make sure the car is not damaged and the phone has not been tampered with or wiped clean.
The FRSC is handling the complaint, while the police are in charge of prosecuting the case.
Ajibade’s team expects to receive his phone and other items the same day, while the car may be released the next day after the fine is settled.
