The Senator representing Ondo South at the National Assembly, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, has revealed that he is facing pressure from influential individuals, higher than Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to withdraw his legal challenge against the governor’s primary election victory.
Senator Ibrahim had filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to nullify the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election that produced Governor Aiyedatiwa as APC governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in Ondo State.
In the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/588/2024, he alleged that the April 20 primary election was riddled with irregularities.
Participating as a governorship aspirant in the contested primary, Ibrahim claimed the process was unlawful and violated Sections 221 and 228 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022.
During a recent interview on Liberal Platform on Sunday, when asked about the possibility of withdrawing the case to foster peace, Senator Ibrahim said:
“There is no one in the highest position in Nigeria that has not had a meeting with me on this matter, including Governor Aiyedatiwa and people higher than him. Yes, I am considering their appeals, but nothing is personal; it is about internal democracy. Allow me to reflect more, but so far, I have said NO to everyone. More pressure is still coming.”
Despite the mounting pressure, Ibrahim has vowed to pursue the case to the Supreme Court, stating:
“If I don’t win at the Supreme Court, it means the same thing to me as if I have won. As I said, nothing is personal; it is about internal democracy. Your concern raises issues of reflection and reflectivity”, the Ondo South Senator said.
