Okiro Withdraws From Ohanaeze Leadership Race Amid State of Origin Debate

Mike Okiro, a former Inspector-General of Police, has exited the contest for the president-general role in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo cultural organization.

His decision followed a court ruling in Enugu, which disqualified him from the race.

The court determined that his state of origin made him ineligible, as the position is zoned to Rivers State while Okiro is claimed to hail from Imo State.

The legal challenge was initiated by Chimenu Amadi on behalf of Indigenous Igbos of Rivers State. Amadi argued that Okiro’s candidacy violated zoning arrangements.

Okiro, however, maintained he is from Rivers State, citing evidence such as his traditional ruler’s confirmation and past affiliations with Rivers-based groups.

The controversy over Okiro’s eligibility has drawn attention in recent months, sparking debates on regional representation and fairness in the election process.

The January 10 election will proceed without Okiro, leaving the race open for other aspirants from Rivers State.
