Ogun State’s Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu on Friday, pardoned 14 inmates during a jail delivery event at the Judiciary Complex in Kobape, Abeokuta.
The release, focused on decongesting correctional facilities, was based on health and compassionate reasons.
However, two high-profile individuals were not granted pardon: Jimoh Muhammed, accused of raping a 14-year-old in 2018, and Suru Philip, involved in the 2019 kidnapping of a traditional ruler.
Justice Dipeolu explained that the initiative helps clear backlogs, hasten legal proceedings, and supports the reintegration of inmates.
She addressed issues such as overcrowding and delayed trials, calling for solutions like non-custodial sentences for minor crimes.
The Chief Judge encouraged the freed inmates to embrace a new, positive direction in life, while the state’s Correctional Centres Comptroller, Ayodeji Adepoju, praised the initiative and called for public support in the reintegration process.
