A police officer has been demoted in Imo State after a video surfaced online showing him and two colleagues assaulting a civilian along the Owerri–Aba Road.
The incident, which drew public attention after going viral, involved officers from the Safer Highway Unit of the Imo State Police Command. Those identified in the footage were Inspector Ofem Obongha, Inspector Obinna Okereke, and Sergeant Anayo Ekezie.
Following the video, the police command reviewed the case and took disciplinary steps according to internal procedures. The investigation revealed that Sergeant Anayo Ekezie used a smoke gunner on the civilian during the assault. As a result, he was found guilty and demoted from his rank of Sergeant to Corporal.
Meanwhile, Inspectors Obongha and Okereke were not spared. Although they did not carry out the assault directly, they received stern warnings for not properly supervising the situation, which led to the misconduct.
The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, reacted to the case by condemning the behavior of the officers involved. He described their actions as a clear violation of police rules and citizens’ rights. He also reaffirmed the command’s strict position against any act of police abuse.
The public has been encouraged to report any form of misconduct by officers. The police command stated that complaints can be sent through its internal response units or via designated phone numbers. The command promised that all reports would be taken seriously and handled without bias.
