Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has urged the National Assembly to ensure broader public engagement in the discussions surrounding the proposed Tax Reform Bills.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi acknowledged the significance of tax reform, recognizing it as an essential and necessary step. However, he emphasized that the reform process should not only serve government interests but should also prioritize public involvement.
“Tax reform is important, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it,” said Obi, “but it is vital that the public has the opportunity to participate in meaningful discussions.”
He suggested that a public hearing be organized to ensure Nigerians from various sectors and backgrounds are included in the decision-making process. This, according to Obi, would foster greater public trust and inclusivity in governance.
Obi further cautioned that the focus should not solely be on increasing government revenue, but rather on assessing the long-term impact of the reform across all regions. “It is crucial to consider the broader implications and the sustainability of the reforms for the entire country,” he said.
In conclusion, Obi stressed the importance of maintaining trust and legitimacy in governance, warning that even well-meaning reforms could fail without these foundational elements.
