Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has responded to accusations made by Bisi Akande, the former governor of Osun State.
Akande had claimed that the #EndSARS protests of 2020, which sought to end police brutality, were staged by Obi’s supporters to stop Bola Tinubu’s presidential run.
Obi and the Obidient Movement rejected these claims, calling them a distortion of history.
Obi’s media aide, Umar Ibrahim, pointed out that Akande’s allegations were misleading and divisive, stressing that the #EndSARS movement was a grassroots effort driven by public frustration with police violence, not a political tool.
The protests, which took place from October 7 to 20, 2020, quickly expanded beyond the demand for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), as people called for better governance.
Ibrahim stated that the accusations wrongly equate two different movements and disrespect the memory of those who died during the protests.
Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, also condemned Akande’s remarks, describing them as an insult to the victims and an attempt to rewrite history.
Both Obi’s team and the Obidient Movement have urged Akande to focus on current issues such as economic challenges and insecurity, rather than spreading false narratives about the #EndSARS protests.
