Former presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi has raised serious concerns regarding the whereabouts of President Bola Tinubu, questioning his absence during a time of significant national crisis.
In a passionate Facebook post on Monday evening, Starnews NG reports that Obi emphasised the urgent need for accountability, stating, “Where is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?”
Obi alleges that Nigeria faces staggering challenges, with approximately 140 million people living in extreme poverty—the highest rate globally. He highlighted the dire situation, noting that Nigeria is grappling with one of the hungriest populations, rampant insecurity, and an unemployment rate exceeding 80 million among the youth. “We are one of the worst places to be born, with infant mortality rates worse than those of a nation seven times our size,” he added.
The former governor expressed his frustration over the President’s extended absence, citing reports that Tinubu spent 196 days abroad in 2025 alone, more time than he has spent in Nigeria. “In the midst of this chaos, where has our President been? He opted for a holiday in Europe while the nation was plunged into a New Year marked by hunger, anxiety, and uncertainty,” Obi stated, lamenting the lack of a New Year address or any form of leadership communication to reassure the populace.
Obi contrasted Nigeria’s situation with that of comparable developing nations, where leaders take charge during crises. He pointed out that following U.S. military strikes on Nigerian soil, the President remained silent while citizens learned about these critical events from foreign media and American officials rather than from their own leader.
“This is not governance; it’s neglect,” Obi declared. “The President was seen abroad yet again for another summit while remaining absent from his own country when he is needed the most.” He further noted the absurdity of Tinubu sending an AI-generated image to the nation instead of addressing his people in person.
Obi insisted that Nigerians deserve clarity and direct communication from their President. “We are not asking for perfection; we demand presence. Leadership is not simply issuing press releases; it’s about standing before the people, engaging with them, and offering clarity,” he stated.
He stressed that effective governance requires unity and consensus, warning that progress is impossible in a divided nation. “When leadership withdraws, unity falters, and the fabric of our society unravels under the weight of mistrust and division,” he cautioned.
In closing, Obi declared, “In a time of crisis, the absence of leadership is not just troubling; it is perilous. Silence in the face of crisis is the loudest form of failure. A New Nigeria is not just Possible; it is essential.
