Obasa’s Removal as Speaker Unlawful, Court Rules

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly as unlawful and unconstitutional.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro annulled the proceedings and resolutions from the Assembly in January that led to Obasa’s removal.

The court ruled that the entire process was flawed and lacked the necessary legal foundation.

Obasa, through his lawyer Chief Afolabi Fashanu, challenged the legality of the removal, naming both the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda—who was appointed as the new Speaker—as defendants in the lawsuit.

Obasa argued that the decision to remove him took place while the Assembly was on recess and during his absence from the country.

He further contended that the session convened to remove him was invalid.

According to Obasa, it was held without his consent or any formal delegation of authority, thus violating the Assembly’s procedural rules.

The lawsuit, which was based on nine key points, referenced relevant sections of the amended 1999 Constitution and the Standing Orders governing the Lagos State House of Assembly.
