The 2025 Nobel Prize season begins on Monday with the announcement of the winner in the Physiology or Medicine category. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm is expected to reveal the recipient not earlier than 11:30 am local time.
This year’s prize may go to a single researcher or be shared by two or three scientists who have worked in the same field. The award recognises groundbreaking contributions to medicine and physiology.
In 2024, the honour went to U.S. researchers Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of micro-RNA and its role in gene regulation. The Medicine or Physiology prize traditionally opens the annual week of Nobel announcements.
Winners in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economics will be revealed in the following days. Each prize will be formally presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
This year, each award carries a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about 1.1 million dollars.
