Reports claiming that the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State was on fire have been dismissed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd). The company clarified that there was no explosion or fire incident at the facility.
Videos circulating on social media had suggested that the refinery was in flames, with one clip showing thick smoke rising from the site. A voice in the background of the video claimed that a fire had broken out, causing concern among the public.
However, sources within the refinery explained that what appeared in the video was not a fire but a routine flare from the flare stack. A flare stack is a tall pipe used in refineries to safely burn off excess gases, preventing pressure buildup in equipment. This process is a normal safety measure in industrial plants.
NNPC Ltd. assured that there was no risk to workers, nearby residents, or the environment. The company urged the public to ignore any reports suggesting an explosion, stating that they were entirely false.
