The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has renewed its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since 2021. According to the group, many of Kanu’s earlier warnings regarding Nigeria’s security and political direction have now become reality.
In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in the country, asserting that several issues Kanu raised years ago—particularly those related to insecurity and political instability—have since come to light. The group believes this validates his long-standing stance on the need to address Nigeria’s structural issues.
Kanu, arrested and extradited nearly four years ago, continues to face charges linked to his separatist advocacy. IPOB insists that his past statements, some of which date back to 2014, had foreseen the rise in violence and the emergence of armed groups across different parts of the country.
The group argued that recent developments across Nigeria reflect the accuracy of Kanu’s predictions, especially on matters of national disunity, insecurity, and the marginalization of ethnic minorities. IPOB reiterated its view that Nigeria’s current structure is flawed and must be revisited. It maintains that the amalgamation of various ethnic groups into a single entity without their consent has fueled conflict and stagnation.
Calling for peaceful dialogue, IPOB stressed the need for a referendum that would enable indigenous peoples to choose their political and cultural futures. It cited examples from other democratic nations where such referenda were used to resolve similar issues.
The group urged the federal government to free Kanu, labeling his continued detention as unjust. It also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and key stakeholders to support calls for restructuring the country based on fairness and justice.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to non-violence and protecting its people, while also calling on all Nigerians to unite in addressing the country’s security problems through collective and peaceful efforts.
