The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has cancelled the usual central Workers’ Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing political instability and undue government interference.
In a directive issued through separate letters dated April 22, 2025, and signed by Deputy General Secretary Ismail Bello, the NLC instructed affiliate unions in Rivers State to mark Workers’ Day within the state NLC premises. Similarly, unions in Edo State have been told to celebrate the occasion individually at their respective union secretariats.
The decision stems from the imposition of an emergency administration in Rivers State and alleged political involvement in the affairs of the Edo NLC council.
Addressing the Rivers situation, the letter to State NLC Chairman Alex Agwanwor stated that the May Day event, with the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space amid Economic Hardship,” would focus on advocating for the restoration of democracy rather than on festivities.
The letter read in part: “Given the current disruption of democratic governance in Rivers, we must use May Day for reflection and advocacy, not celebrations. You are therefore instructed to organise a peaceful rally within the NLC premises, highlighting the call for democratic restoration, workers’ rights, and public freedom.”
In Edo, the directive to State Chairman Olaye Odion instructed affiliates to hold separate commemorations at their union offices, noting that internal efforts to resolve leadership disputes are still ongoing.
The NLC pledged to continue working towards unity within the Edo council and urged members to ensure a peaceful and orderly observance of Workers’ Day.
Relations between the Edo State Government and the NLC have remained strained following the government’s rejection of Odion’s leadership amid allegations of political bias during last year’s election period. Efforts by the NLC national leadership and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to mediate were reportedly ignored by the state authorities.
Despite multiple appeals, no significant progress has been made in resolving the dispute.
