The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the state government to raise the minimum wage of workers to N150,000, citing the high cost of living in Lagos and the recent wage adjustments by Imo and Ebonyi states.
Chairperson of the Lagos NLC, Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday, noting that workers in the state currently earn N85,000 as minimum wage, which she described as inadequate given the cost of accommodation, transportation, food, and utilities in Lagos.
“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space. No one can blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers,” she said.
Sesi stressed that employees deserve fair compensation and decent working conditions that reflect the realities of living in the state, while expressing confidence that other state governments would soon follow suit.
It will be recalled that Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, recently announced an increase in the minimum wage for state workers from N76,000 to N104,000. Similarly, the Ebonyi State Government raised its workers’ minimum wage from N70,000 to N90,000.
The Lagos NLC urged the state government to emulate these examples and set a benchmark that reflects the state’s economic position and the daily struggles of its workforce.
