Nine Deaths Recorded in New Cholera Outbreak in Rivers

Rivers State has confirmed a new cholera outbreak, which has claimed the lives of nine individuals across two local government areas, Andoni and Akuku-Toru.

According to Vanguard, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the state’s Commissioner for Health, disclosed this during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday. She stated that three deaths were reported in Andoni, while six fatalities were recorded in Akuku-Toru.

The health commissioner noted that these deaths followed a total of 41 suspected cholera cases reported in both areas.

“We deeply sympathize with the families of those affected by this suspected cholera outbreak. The disease has led to cases of acute watery diarrhea in Isiodun, Andoni LGA, though we are still awaiting confirmation that the deaths were directly caused by cholera,” Dr. Oreh explained.

She went on to describe cholera as a waterborne disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, which thrives in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. Cholera spreads through contaminated water, food, and surfaces that have been exposed to infected individuals.

Dr. Oreh expressed concern over the recurring cholera outbreaks in the state, especially during the dry season, as these present serious public health risks due to their high transmission and mortality rates.

“As of January 13, 2025, there have been 41 suspected cases, with nine confirmed deaths—three from Andoni and six from Akuku-Toru,” she said.

The Rivers State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre was first alerted on January 11, 2025, after three deaths occurred within 48 hours in Isiodun, Andoni LGA. A rapid response team was promptly deployed to investigate and address the situation.

The Ministry of Health has since activated emergency response measures in collaboration with local authorities and partners, including enhanced surveillance and public health awareness campaigns.

Dr. Oreh urged the public to follow basic hygiene practices to help contain the spread of the disease. “It is crucial to wash hands regularly with soap and clean water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Drinking water should be boiled or treated with chlorine before consumption. Additionally, food must be thoroughly cooked and consumed while hot,” she advised.
