Nigerian Woman Survives Attempted Lynching Over Alleged Lesbianism in Kano

In a harrowing incident, Helen Ataine, a Nigerian woman, narrowly escaped death at the hands of local residents in Kano due to accusations of engaging in lesbianism.

Reports indicate that Helen was allegedly discovered in a compromising situation with Halima Abubakar on February 19, 2021, shortly after afternoon prayers. A neighbor, having witnessed the encounter, alerted others, leading to a swift intervention by Hisbah, the Islamic enforcement agency.

While Halima managed to evade capture, Helen was apprehended and taken for questioning. Out of desperation, she denied the accusations, despite the evidence against her. Tragically, her father, who tried to defend her, was brutally beaten and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

An anonymous resident confirmed the disturbing events, stating, “This is not an isolated case. Anyone found engaging in lesbianism faces severe consequences. Many victims, if they survive, are often coerced into renouncing their sexual orientation under duress, and sadly, some have faced sexual assaults while in custody.”

Further investigations conducted by Starnews NG on March 5 revealed that a clergyman intervened, rescuing Helen and several other detainees. As of now, their current location remains unknown, raising concerns about their safety and well-being.
