Oladapo Fadugba, a Nigerian who became a U.S. citizen, is facing up to 27 years in prison after being accused of involvement in a $690,000 wire fraud and making false claims to gain U.S. citizenship.
The U.S. Attorney for Florida, Gregory Kehoe, announced that Fadugba was indicted on several charges, including wire fraud, identity theft, and providing false information during his naturalization process.
The alleged fraud took place between October 2020 and July 2023, when Fadugba is said to have misappropriated $690,000 in funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
These funds, intended for a local healthcare provider’s reimbursement, were transferred into bank accounts under his control.
To carry out the transfers, Fadugba is accused of using someone else’s identity.
In addition to the fraud, Fadugba is also accused of lying during his citizenship application by claiming he had never been involved in any crimes that resulted in an arrest.
If convicted on all charges, Fadugba could face a lengthy prison sentence and the loss of $400,000 in alleged proceeds from his criminal activities.
Kehoe concluded by noting that the indictment is merely an accusation, and Fadugba is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
