The wife of the Niger State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Bago, has donated N50 million to victims of the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Speaking during her visit to the affected area, Hajiya Bago explained that the funds were a personal contribution from her and her family to support recovery efforts and ease the suffering of displaced residents.
“We are here to console victims of the flood disaster and assess the situation,” she said. “There is nothing we can do as the disaster has happened. We only advise the people to be cautious henceforth and avoid building on waterways.”
According to her, the distribution of relief items has already begun through the local council chairman and the village head.
She also noted that a search and rescue operation was ongoing, with excavators deployed to recover more bodies.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, urged victims to see the disaster as an act of God.
The Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mrs Afiniki Dauda, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Mairo Mann, also extended their condolences.
The village head, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, expressed gratitude for the governor’s wife’s gesture and appealed to the state government to provide compensation for affected residents.
The flood, caused by heavy rainfall on May 29, claimed 153 lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
