In response to the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly has suspended all legislative sessions and activities until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The suspension was formally announced in a statement issued by Kamoru Ogunlana, Clerk to the National Assembly, on Monday. According to him, the directive came from the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives as a mark of respect for the late Nigerian leader.
“The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House have instructed that all legislative engagements be suspended immediately until July 22, 2025,” the statement said.
Lawmakers have also been urged to adjust their schedules in order to participate in the burial rites and national mourning of the former president.
The leadership of the National Assembly extended condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation. The former president, they said, would be remembered for his role in promoting unity, integrity, and national development.
Buhari, who led the country first as a military ruler between 1983 and 1985 and later as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
