The National Assembly has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara alongside other elected officials.
Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, confirmed that the President had extensive consultations with key lawmakers at the Presidential Villa before taking the decisive action.
Among those present at the meeting were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senate Leader Michael Bamidele, and House Leader Julius Ihonvbere.
Also in attendance were top security chiefs, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; military service chiefs; Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Adeola Ajayi; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed.
Rotimi noted that the deliberations at the meeting centred on the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, adding that all those in attendance unanimously backed the President’s decision.
Meanwhile, the President has formally written to the National Assembly, seeking legislative approval for the emergency rule.
The letter is expected to be read on the floor of the House of Representatives today for further legislative action.
