N18 million expired drugs destroyed by NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, in Katsina State has reported the destruction of expired drugs valued at over N18 million.

These drugs, totaling approximately 15 metric tonnes, were seized from various locations across the state.

Musa Momodu, the NAFDAC coordinator in Katsina, provided this update to journalists during a one-day workshop for stakeholders on Thursday.

He detailed that the expired drugs were destroyed by the North-West zonal office in Kano State. Some of the drugs were voluntarily surrendered by their owners, while others were confiscated.

Momodu also highlighted NAFDAC’s strong performance in Katsina, noting that the agency’s initiatives have been positively received by both consumers and stakeholders in the community.

He said, “The workshop was organised because we have discovered that there is a gap in knowledge between the stakeholders and what NAFDAC really requires of them.

“The main essence is to continue reminding ourselves what’s required of us as an agency, and also our stakeholders in different fields, especially the bakers, patent medicine vendors and pure water people.”

Those who attended the workshop included members of the Association of Table Water Producers, and the Nigerian Association of Patents and Proprietary Medicine Dealers.

Others were agrochemical dealers, Master Bakers, Supermarket operators, fast food restaurants and micro, small and medium enterprises, MSMEs,.
