My encounter with Ibrahim Magu of EFCC

By Lere Olayinka

I was in Abuja to attend a Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) program in 2017.

The then EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu was one of those who delivered Keynote Address at the event.

In his address, Magu accused media owners have been aiding corruption in the country.

After he finished speaking and was about to leave, I accosted him and asked him what he had done to the loads of petitions against a certain Minister in the govt of Buhari.

Magu, replied, saying “We will work on it.”

Then I said; “You will work on it? Not you are already working on it? Your EFCC is biased. You will look the other way when it has to do with those in Buhari’s Govt, but will even pick Media reports on perceived opponents of the govt.”

Magu did not respond again. He simply left.

Like five minutes later, I was told that someone was waiting for me outside and I went out of the venue to know who wanted to see me.

That was where I got the bombshell!

Two Policemen told me that they have been directed to inform me to leave the venue and never to come back.

I told the policemen straight away that I was attending the event as head of a broadcasting organization that is a member of BON and that no one, except the Executive Secretary of BON can tell me to leave or stay.

Thanks to Mr Segun Olaleye, the Executive Secretary of BON then. He stood his ground, insisting that he invited people to the event and only him can determine who should stay or leave.

Magu’s Policemen later left while John Momoh, who was BON Chairman then, personally apologized for their unruly behavior.

That’s how powerful Magu thought he was then. But where is the same Magu today?
