A military jet sent to protect residents of Mani community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State mistakenly killed local vigilantes while responding to a deadly bandit attack over the weekend.
The bandits had invaded the farming community, killing more than 20 farmers and kidnapping over 50 villagers.
The attack left many families in sorrow, as the peaceful area was thrown into chaos and fear.
As the bandits carried out their assault, the military deployed an aircraft to support the community.
However, in the heat of the operation, the jet mistakenly fired on vigilantes who had mobilized to defend their people.
The error added to the tragedy, turning what was meant to be a rescue effort into another source of pain.
Details of the incident surfaced on Monday through a security analyst who posted the report on social media.
His update revealed that the bandits struck on Sunday, and the military’s attempt to help ended in a mistaken strike on those working to resist the attack.
Neither the Zamfara State Government nor any security agency has released an official statement about the incident.
Many affected residents are still searching for missing loved ones and hoping for the safe return of those kidnapped.
