Manchester United have confirmed the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim following a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy after a series of public comments.
Amorim recently caused controversy when he rejected the title of head coach and described himself as manager, openly criticising senior figures at the club. He challenged the recruitment team and sporting director Jason Wilcox to do their jobs, a move that reportedly angered club executives.
Following emergency talks among top officials, United decided to part ways with the Portuguese coach, citing the need to give the team the best chance of finishing strongly in the Premier League. The club thanked Amorim for his service and wished him well in the future.
Tensions had been growing behind the scenes, with Amorim unhappy about the club’s transfer strategy and its reluctance to fully support his preferred 3-4-2-1 system. He was said to be frustrated by suggestions that no new players would be signed during the January transfer window.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim manager and will take charge of the team’s next league match. Amorim, whose contract runs until 2027, is expected to receive a full payout following his exit.
