Man Bites Snake to Death After Being Attacked During Nap

Santosh Lohar, a 35-year-old man from Pandua, Jharkhand, India, took an extraordinary measure after being attacked by a snake while he was napping: he bit the snake to death.

The incident occurred when Lohar, who was asleep, was suddenly bitten by the snake. In response, he grabbed the reptile with an iron rod and bit it twice. Lohar later told India Today, “In my village, there’s a belief that if a snake bites you, you must bite it back twice to neutralize the venom.”

This local superstition suggests that biting the snake back can prevent the victim from dying.

Following the incident, Lohar was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was given anti-venom treatment and released the next day.

The specific type of snake involved in the attack has not been identified.

India is known to have nearly 300 snake species, more than 60 of which are highly venomous, including the Indian Cobra, Russell’s viper, the common krait, and the saw-scaled viper.
