The Ondo State Police Command has arrested one Eze Amadi over the alleged killing of his neighbour’s 28-year-old son, Ifeanyi Otu, in Kajola, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.
Ayanlade said the suspect was already in police custody, while investigation was ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. He assured that the suspect would be charged to court once investigations were concluded.
“The suspect is already in our custody, investigation is ongoing and after investigation is concluded, he will be charged to court.
I urge residents to remain calm over the matter,” Ayanlade said.
Residents of Kajola were thrown into mourning on Monday after the body of the victim was allegedly discovered inside a water drum at the suspect’s residence.
Sources told NAN that Amadi allegedly tortured Otu to death before attempting to conceal his corpse. The suspect was reportedly caught by residents while trying to dispose of the body on a motorcycle under the cover of night.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said:
“Nobody knows what transpired between them.”
The victim’s father, Mr. Michael Otu, who lives in the same neighbourhood with the suspect, described the killing of his son as devastating.
“I was at home when I received a call that my son’s body, wrapped with foam, had been discovered inside a water drum.
When I got to the scene, I saw him lying lifeless after the drum was cut open.
I was told that the suspect was caught while trying to dispose of the body. Justice must be served in this case,” he said.
The police appealed for calm, stressing that justice would be done once investigations were completed.
Meanwhile, residents of Kajola have continued to express shock and grief over the gruesome killing, as the community awaits the arraignment of the suspect in court.
