Lagos GAC Holds Emergency Meeting to Decide Fate of Obasa

By: Bayero Ade

The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of Lagos State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) is convening an emergency meeting today to discuss the future of former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

According to Afripost, the meeting, set to take place at the Lagos House Marina, comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis in the state legislature.

As the supreme decision-making body of Lagos APC, the GAC, led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi with President Bola Tinubu serving as its lifetime patron, has been pivotal in resolving internal party matters. The council’s decisions are typically binding on party members.

At the heart of today’s meeting is the contentious removal of Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. On January 13, 2025, 32 of the 40 lawmakers voted to remove him in absentia, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, misconduct, and autocratic behavior. Following his ousting, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was appointed as the new Speaker.

However, the removal has sparked divergent views within the party. Some GAC members have raised concerns about the legality of the process. Muraina Taiwo, a representative from Isolo Constituency, criticized the Assembly for reconvening during the recess to carry out the impeachment.

In a similar vein, Senator Anthony Adefuye has called the impeachment illegal, while Musiliu Obanikoro, another GAC member, dismissed Adefuye’s statement, labeling it as “careless.”

The outcome of today’s meeting could significantly impact Obasa’s political future and shape the power dynamics within the Lagos APC.
