The Lagos State Government has shut down Purple Mall in Lekki indefinitely after a tragic event in the mall’s parking area claimed the life of a resident on Wednesday.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure, stating it was necessary to protect the public and to begin a detailed investigation into the cause of the incident.
A special team of investigators has been set up by the ministry to examine what led to the structural failure and whether the facility met the required safety and environmental standards.
“The probe will dig into both the direct and deeper causes of the incident,” Wahab explained. “It will also assess the mall’s compliance with construction and safety rules, and look into any possible violations.”
Wahab described the incident as a preventable tragedy, adding that the government is committed to ensuring those responsible are held accountable.
“This was a completely avoidable loss,” he said. “We are determined to make sure this never happens again. Every Lagos resident deserves to feel safe in public spaces, and we won’t compromise on that standard.”
He extended sympathies to the family of the deceased and assured residents that steps are being taken to avoid similar occurrences.
Wahab also said the public would receive updates as the investigation moves forward, while stressing that the Lagos State Government remains committed to enforcing safety and environmental laws in all commercial and public areas.
