The Lagos State House of Assembly has invited five ride-hailing companies, Uber, Bolt, Indrive, Rida, and LagRide, to appear for a public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.
The invitation follows a petition submitted by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), which is pushing for better treatment of drivers and stricter checks on the companies’ activities.
The union said many drivers in Lagos are being mistreated, underpaid, and left without proper support or safety measures.
The public hearing is expected to focus on complaints about poor working conditions, unfair pricing decisions by the companies, lack of security for drivers, failure to support drivers’ welfare, and attempts to silence union efforts.
The union accused the companies of ignoring a national agreement meant to protect workers and of endangering drivers’ lives through negligence.
The Lagos Assembly aims to use the hearing to better understand the concerns raised by the drivers and work toward setting fair rules that can improve safety and working conditions in the ride-hailing sector.
