Labour Party Leader Criticizes Gender-Based Violence Against Women Politicians

By Our Correspondent

Dudu Manuga, the National Women Leader of the Labour Party (LP), has condemned the growing trend of online harassment and intimidation directed at female politicians.

Speaking at an event in Abuja marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, Manuga urged Nigerians to stop viewing women in politics as promiscuous or unworthy of their positions.

Manuga addressed the psychological and emotional toll that these attacks have on women, particularly in the political sphere.

She highlighted the struggles many female politicians face, including unwarranted judgments, cyber bullying, and direct attacks.

The situation, she said, often creates an environment of fear and discouragement, even preventing some women from pursuing political roles.

As part of the 16-day Orange Campaign against gender-based violence, Manuga called for greater respect and support for women, stressing that women in politics should not be subjected to harassment or degrading stereotypes.

She emphasized the importance of tackling both physical and psychological violence that continues to plague female leaders in Nigeria.
