The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has warned operatives of the command against extortion, unlawful phone searches, and profiling of youths as internet fraudsters.
Ojo, who addressed Deputy Commissioners, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders in Ilorin on Friday, said such acts would no longer be tolerated under his leadership.
He noted that the directive was in line with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s instruction to safeguard citizens’ rights and restore public confidence in the police.
“Officers who harass citizens, unlawfully search their phones, or label them as Yahoo boys without evidence are committing serious offences,” the CP stated.
He stressed that phone checks on the road remain prohibited unless a device has been established as an exhibit in an ongoing investigation.
The CP assured students and young people in the state that the command would protect their dignity and fundamental rights, while urging them to remain law-abiding.
Meanwhile, Ojo disclosed that enforcement of tinted glass permits would commence on October 2, 2025. Motorists without valid permits, or those using fake ones, would be prosecuted within 24 hours.
Police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, advised drivers to carry original permits at all times and encouraged the public to report extortion through designated complaint channels.
