Residents of Angwan Mayo, in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, witnessed a dramatic twist on Monday morning when suspected kidnappers who had just collected ransom money were involved in a serious car crash.
Eyewitnesses said the gang, believed to have collected ransom from the relatives of their captives, was fleeing the area at top speed when their vehicle suddenly lost control and veered off the road. The crash occurred around the Angwan Mayo junction, causing panic among residents who had been living in fear of constant kidnapping incidents.
Security operatives, including soldiers and police officers, arrived at the scene within minutes, cordoning off the area and preventing the suspects from escaping into nearby bushes. The intervention, locals said, restored calm to the community.
A resident who gave his name as Ibrahim told reporters: “We saw the vehicle speeding, then suddenly it swerved and somersaulted. Not long after, soldiers and policemen arrived. Everyone was afraid at first because we thought the kidnappers might start shooting.”
While details remain sketchy, security sources confirmed that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the number of suspects involved, the condition of those inside the vehicle, and whether any ransom money was recovered. Authorities also withheld information on whether the kidnap victims had been released.
Community leaders in Kokona praised the swift response of the security agencies, stressing that such prompt action was needed to reassure residents who had been terrorised by frequent abductions.
As of press time, the Nasarawa State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident, but security patrols were reportedly intensified across the axis to prevent further criminal activity.
