Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has called for explanations from military authorities regarding the withdrawal of troops from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, shortly before the abduction of dozens of schoolgirls in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
Idris made his statement on Thursday during a visit from the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, who came to show solidarity with the state.
The governor expressed that he was “deeply troubled” by the decision to withdraw security personnel from the school, especially in light of previous intelligence alerts provided by the state government.
According to Idris, soldiers reportedly vacated the school around 3 a.m., while the attackers struck less than 45 minutes later.
“We provided intelligence reports. We alerted them. So, who gave the order for troops to withdraw at that critical hour?” Idris questioned, demanding a thorough military investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also highlighted that the withdrawal contradicted earlier assurances of enhanced protection for schools in vulnerable border communities that are frequently targeted by bandits.
Ajaero voiced his solidarity with the state and the families of the abducted students, urging federal security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the girls.
The abduction, which has drawn nationwide outrage, is the latest in a troubling series of attacks on schools in Nigeria’s North-West, despite the government’s repeated pledges to strengthen security around learning centers.
