Katsina suspends kankara district head for ‘working with bandits’

The Katsina emirate council has suspended Yusuf Lawal, district head of Kankara, for allegedly working with bandits in the state.

Iro Bindawa, secretary of the council, said in a statement that Lawal’s suspension was with immediate effect.

While he did not disclose the reason for his suspension, Mamman Ifo, secretary to the Katsina emirate, told BBC the measure was taken because of his alleged links with bandits.

Ifo also said the emirate took the step to reassure the government and people of Katsina that it in support of the fight against banditry.

He added that the emirate has set up a special committee to investigate the allegations against Lawal.

His suspension came months after gunmen attacked Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, from where they abducted over 300 schoolboys.

A number of traditional rulers have also been suspended in parts of the north for allegedly working with bandits.

On April 16, the Zamfara state government suspended Surajo Namakkah, district head of Badarawa in Shinkafi emirate council, for conferring a traditional title on a military officer arrested for allegedly selling ammunition to bandits.
