Kalu Calls for Nigeria’s Permanent Seat at UN Security Council

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has urged world leaders to grant Nigeria a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.

He made this call while representing Nigeria at a parliamentary meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, ahead of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva.

Kalu pointed out that the current global decision-making system favors developed countries, leaving developing nations like Nigeria struggling with economic and industrial growth.

He stressed the importance of giving Africa, particularly Nigeria, a stronger voice in global policies.

Using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an example, he noted that while these goals address global challenges, they do not align with the immediate needs of developing nations.

He argued that without proper representation, developing countries cannot fully benefit from multilateral agreements.

Kalu also suggested amending Article 108 of the UN Charter to ensure fair inclusion of African nations in global decision-making.

He expressed appreciation to leaders of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other parliamentary heads for the platform to discuss these issues.
