The strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Ondo State is still ongoing after a meeting with the state government ended without an agreement.
JUSUN began the strike last Friday to protest the state government’s refusal to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary. A meeting was later held between union leaders and the state’s Head of Service, Philip Bayo, in an attempt to resolve the matter, but the discussions did not yield any progress.
According to the union, top officials of the state government who have the authority to take concrete decisions, such as the Governor and the Attorney General, have not shown interest in meeting with them. The union added that they have not seen any clear move from the government towards resolving the issue.
The Ondo JUSUN Secretary, Kehinde Alade, said the union is not willing to step down its demands to open the way for negotiations. He explained that they are waiting for the government to show more seriousness before they can call off the strike.
Due to the strike, all offices at the State High Court and various magistrates’ courts in Akure have remained closed, with no judicial services available to the public.
