President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking the confirmation of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The letter, addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, was read during Tuesday’s plenary session alongside other presidential communications seeking legislative approval for various appointments.
According to the letter, the nomination was made in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to appoint the head of the nation’s electoral body subject to Senate confirmation.
Reports from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) indicate that the Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.
If confirmed, Professor Amupitan will succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC Chairman recently ended after nearly a decade at the helm of Nigeria’s electoral administration.
Further deliberations on the nomination are expected to take place in the coming days.
