JUST IN – PDP Speaks on Selection of Senate Minority Leader

By Miracle Ogunde

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the alleged moves by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to meddle with the affairs of the Minority party members in the Senate.

The party said the emergence of the Minority Leadership is an exclusive reserve of the Minority Caucus as expressly stipulated by Constitutional provisions and Standing Rules of the Senate.

The resolution was contained in a press release issued on Monday and signed by National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Debo Ologunagba, after the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met with members of the PDP Caucus in the Senate.

According to the press release, the importance of a virile and stable opposition in the Senate and indeed the National Assembly was emphasized and the Caucus assured that it would play an important role in the defense of democracy, the interest and wellbeing of Nigerians.

The party and the Senators, however, agreed to continue with consultations on the emergence of the Minority Leadership in the Senate, and also resolved to collectively present a unified leadership after due and conclusive considerations.

Furthermore, the party leadership promised to provide the necessary leadership for the Senate caucus and consequently agreed that the NWC of the party communicates the position of the party to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on the on-going consultation in the Minority Caucus as regards the nominations into the Minority leadership positions in the Senate for necessary action.

The NWC also commends the members of the PDP Caucus in the Senate for their unity, steadfastness, loyalty to the Party and commitment towards the sustenance and deepening of democracy in our country.
