JUST IN: Many feared dead as gunmen storm Anambra community

…Police Confirmed the incident

Tension gripped residents of Ogboji in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday following a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen that left many feared dead and several others critically injured.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the heavily armed assailants stormed the peaceful community in the evening hours and opened fire on a group of people holding a meeting, believed to include members of a town union association. The attackers, said to have arrived in two vehicles, reportedly fired indiscriminately, sending residents fleeing for safety.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, stated that at least ten people were killed while nine others sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries. However, unverified reports from locals suggest the number of casualties may be higher.

“It was a scene of horror,” one resident who pleaded anonymity told The Nation. “We heard gunshots from a distance and then people started running. The gunmen did not say anything. They just started shooting.”

A disturbing video from the scene has since gone viral, showing victims lying motionless in pools of blood, while voices in the background cried out in anguish.

SP Ikenga noted that police operatives have launched a manhunt for the assailants, assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to book. “We condemn this barbaric act and our men have been deployed to ensure peace is restored. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, there are growing speculations that it may be linked to internal community disputes or resistance to an alleged sit-at-home enforcement.
