The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has resolved the case of Jamiu Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), whose academic record was recently called into question over claims of a fake admission.
Basola, who completed his studies in 2024 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.41, had encountered difficulties during his clearance for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) when it was discovered that his name was missing from the JAMB matriculation list—a key requirement for mobilisation.
He explained that he wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2017 and was offered admission by FUTA the following year. However, his JAMB portal was inaccessible, and school officials later told him his NYSC mobilisation had been denied due to inconsistencies in his admission status.
After several attempts to resolve the issue, including letters to the university’s registrar, vice-chancellor, and admissions committee, Basola recently confirmed that access to his JAMB profile had been restored and his name now appears on the matriculation list.
“My portal was locked before, but I can now log in and reprint my documents. My name has also been added to the matriculation list. Though I haven’t been mobilised yet, progress is being made,” he said in a phone interview.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also released a statement on Monday confirming the development. According to NANS National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa, the resolution followed sustained advocacy by the student body, particularly from its national leadership and the South-West Zone D.
Ajasa described the outcome as a step forward in the fight to defend students’ rights. He credited the intervention of NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, and praised the Civil Engineering Department at FUTA for assisting in verifying Basola’s admission.
“Jamiu’s ordeal raised serious concerns about administrative lapses affecting students. His perseverance, along with our collective effort, has brought this matter to a fair resolution,” Ajasa stated.
He added that NANS will continue to follow up to ensure Basola is included in the next NYSC mobilisation batch and that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
Basola’s case drew attention on social media, where he had alleged that JAMB invalidated his admission years after he began his academic journey. In response, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, claimed the Board had no official record of Basola’s admission and questioned the authenticity of the documents in his possession.
JAMB also dismissed emotional appeals surrounding the student’s personal background, insisting that clarity could only be achieved if Basola explained how he obtained the admission letter in question.
