Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State will help mold Governor Siminalayi Fubara into a powerful political leader. Jonathan shared this viewpoint on Sunday during the 1st Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture Exhibition in Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State.
Governor Fubara is currently involved in a political feud with his predecessor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Speaking at the event, Jonathan acknowledged that political struggles are common for new leaders and urged Fubara to stay focused on governance amidst the challenges.
“I know you (Governor Fubara) are facing difficulties. This is your first time in such a high office, and it is normal to encounter obstacles,” Jonathan said. “But remember, no one becomes a General without engaging in battles. These challenges are preparing you to become a political General. With your dedication and the support of the people of Rivers, God will guide you through.”
Jonathan also called on the people of Rivers State to support Fubara and foster peace, highlighting the region’s strategic importance to the Niger Delta and the nation’s economy. “We need a peaceful Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta. Instability here would disrupt the entire region and negatively affect Nigeria’s economy,” he stated.
He further urged Fubara to remain calm and focused, emphasizing that political positions are temporary, and after his tenure, another leader will take over. “There is no need for unnecessary conflict over political positions,” Jonathan said.
The former president also praised the traditional ruler of Etche, Eze Ken O. Nwala, for his decade of leadership and commended the Etche people for their agricultural contributions, solidifying the region’s reputation as Rivers State’s food basket.
Governor Fubara, who was conferred with a traditional title at the event alongside Jonathan, expressed gratitude for the honor and reassured the people of his commitment to their well-being. He promised more government initiatives and development projects for Etche, attributing the focus of his administration to the region’s steadfast support.
“I will not disappoint you,” Fubara said, acknowledging Jonathan’s presence as a symbol of humility and encouragement for his administration.
