The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has indefinitely postponed the planned inauguration of a Sharia Court of Law in Oyo State following widespread criticism from Nigerians.
The court’s launch, initially scheduled for January 11, 2025, was suspended after the announcement sparked public backlash, especially from the southern region, where many argued that such measures are unsuitable for the area.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Imam Daud Igi Ogun, the Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, said:
“On behalf of Oyo Muslim indigenes, we wish to inform the public that the inauguration of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch), earlier set for January 11, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Center, Oba Adeyemi High School Road, Mobolaje Area, Oyo, has been suspended until further notice. Islam represents peace!”
The announcement followed the circulation of a flier promoting the event, which went viral and drew criticism. The launch was initially set to take place at the Muslim Community Islamic Center in Oyo.
