Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transport under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has issued a scathing statement today on his verified X account, expressing deep frustration over the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria. The statement, obtained by Starnews NG, highlights the government’s apparent lack of political will to combat the rising tide of killings and terrorist attacks that threaten the nation.
Amaechi criticises the current administration for failing to provide adequate protection for its citizens, citing the surge in terrorist attacks and mass kidnappings across the country as a significant challenge to national security. He argues that this failure to act decisively has emboldened terrorists and eroded public trust in the government.
In his statement, he points to a series of alarming incidents, including the incessant attacks on innocent citizens in Plateau, the reported kidnapping of secondary schoolgirls in Kebbi, an ambush on soldiers in Borno that resulted in the abduction and killing of Brigadier General M. Uba, an attack on a church in Kwara, and the kidnapping of a priest, Rev. Fr. Bobbo Paschal, in Kaduna— all occurring within a single week.
Amaechi calls on the Federal Government to enhance its response to terrorist activities, strengthen military intelligence and tactical operations, and meet the expectations of the Nigerian populace.
“To Mr. President: your primary assignment is the security of lives and property,” he states. “Enough of looking the other way or issuing watery statements of condemnation. Prioritising a summit or jetting out for whatever reason when Nigerians are dying can never be the trait of a good leader. It is time to probe wrong decisions, strategise, and make tough calls.”
He emphasises that the current situation demands decisive leadership, stronger intelligence coordination, and accountability.
“We did it in Rivers State; it can be done in the country. We are prepared to help if you request help,” Amaechi concludes, urging the government to take immediate action to protect its citizens and restore faith in its ability to ensure their safety.
