INEC to commence nationwide voter registration August 18

…Targets students, rural dwellers in fresh exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will begin a fresh nationwide voter registration exercise on Monday, August 18, 2025, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the continuous voter registration (CVR) will be conducted across the country with a focus on capturing eligible Nigerians, especially students, first-time voters, and residents in rural areas.

Yakubu said the exercise will take place in all 774 local government areas, with additional mobile registration units deployed to schools, marketplaces, and remote communities to ensure wider coverage and inclusion.

He also stated that INEC has introduced improved technological tools to streamline the registration process and reduce cases of duplicate or invalid registrations.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is disenfranchised,” Yakubu said, urging citizens who have not registered to seize the opportunity.

He assured Nigerians that the process would be transparent, efficient, and secure, adding that adequate provisions had been made for people living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

INEC’s spokesperson, Festus Okoye, also confirmed that the Commission has partnered with civil society groups and community leaders to raise awareness and mobilize turnout.

The electoral body appealed to the public to cooperate with registration officials and report any irregularities during the exercise.
